The stone bridge built by the Byzantine emperor Justinianus in 558-562 AD is 346.5 m long and 10.5 m wide and 13 arches including the archway where the railroad passes. At the western end of the bridge there is a track and the eastern end has an apse. To the south of the bridge there is a cistern adjacent to the bridge and a cistern structure.

The historic SANGARIOS (Justinian, BEŞKÖPRÜ) bridge is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
